Our short story on helping Homeless Youth on the Gold Coast.

“He walks on, doesn’t look back. He pretends he can’t hear her”. – Phil Collins

“Is it ok to walk away from someone in need? Is it ok to ignore the helpless? Homelessness in Australia is on the rise and now with Covid job losses, things are about to get worse. Can we stand still; can we listen; how can we help?”

The opening lines from my 13-year old’s persuasive speech assignment for school. Top marks or not, it made me think, I was moved to stop, look back and listen.

At Coolphase we help others, we like to do what’s needed, when it’s needed. So we support our friends, employees, and families, more importantly, we are active in supporting the wider community. We’ve previously donated to the Salvation ArmyBeenleigh Women’s Health and Wellbeing CentreThe Ross Maclean Fellowship and many other small organisations, sporting clubs and charities. But it’s never enough.

Because of my son’s speech we decided to find a homeless & disadvantaged cause on the Coast that could use our help. The Gold Coast Project for Homeless Youth posed a great opportunity as we could offer a larger donation by utilising Bartercard Dollars and cash. So, we went to work and contacted the team at GCPHY, they were thrilled that we wanted to help. Cathy was great to talk to and we could hear the appreciation in her voice. We could tell the GCPHY team were passionate about what they did.

About the Gold Coast Project for Homeless Youth

The Gold Coast Project for Homeless Youth is an incorporated community organisation providing accommodation and support for homeless young people in the Gold Coast area.

Their mission:

“To encourage young people to reach their full potential by providing quality services in a safe and supportive environment”.

The GCPHY team supports their clients by using a transitional model that aims to support young people as they move from street to home. The process teaches important life skills and offers a stable foundation for a bright future.

“Studies have shown that the longer a young person maintains housing, the less likely they are to return to a cycle of homelessness”.

If you’d also like to donate to The Gold Coast Project for Homeless Youth, you can do so here: https://www.paypal.com/fundraiser/charity/3501435

We hope our small gesture (and yours) can help.

Coolphase Electrical Services, our commercial refrigeration electrical team is practical, professional and perfect!

This week we celebrated the individuality of one of the most important parts of Coolphase, our commercial refrigeration electrical team. Finally Coolphase Electrical Services, has officially formed its own identity. Ultimately by being practical, professional and committed to craftsmanship, our electrical team now stands proudly on its own three phases.

Our electrical company is lead by Wayne Watson. Wayne’s reputation is synonymous with greatness within the refrigeration electrical industry. Therefore his knowledge and experience has given him a great platform to build an excellent electrical group. Consequently it’s group full of enthusiastic young tradesmen. Our whole electrical team embodies Wayne’s spirit and by taking pride in their work. And they embrace every new challenge with a “we can do anything” attitude.

Our services include, but are not limited to: Refrigeration Electrical Installations, Refrigeration Electrical Breakdown Services and HVAC (air conditioning) Electrical Installations.

As with everything Coolphase, apprentices are at our core. As a result we employ apprentices across every year level. So, this not only ensures our depth of talent going forward, but also provides stability for the refrigeration electrical industry. As can be seen, we are proud of our young people, we are proud of their commitment and mounting achievements.

Coolphase Electrical Services has been a long time in the making. There’s been hard times and exciting times, but now it’s time to shine. We want to continue our growth and share our world of talent with you.

We were at EuroShop purely and simply to support our case supply partner De Rigo Refrigeration, their first attendance in twenty years.

THAT’S A WRAP!

Overwhelming – check

Lots of stuff to look at – check

Sore feet – check

Lack of sleep (due to networking) – check

This was probably our longest trade show visit ever. We were at EuroShop purely and simply to support our case supply partner De Rigo Refrigeration, their first attendance at EuroShop in twenty years. They did a fantastic job, the displays were “Awesome”, their marketing team, sales staff and commitment even better. We congratulate them on a great show and look forward to the next one in 3 years!

Factory Visit

Prior to the show, we travelled to the De Rigo factory Belluno to view new products and learn more about the LEAD production process. While in Belluno we were also lucky enough to visit a recent transcritical Co2 installation. The Installation was at a local Kangaru store (appropriate for an Aussie visit) and included a De Rigo Enex Co2 plant and De Rigo Refrigeration cases. De Rigo’s lead installation engineer was present to discuss the detailed installation process and control of the transcritical system. We look forward to the day when we have our first opportunity to install a project like this.

Back to the show. Making new friends and reuniting with old is a great part of industry trade shows. I’m sure my dancing, drinking games and larrakin antics have made a lasting impression… Wayne got to catch up with nearly everyone he used to work with in the UK, it was good to see him reminiscing about old times.

The Show

With almost 128,000 square meters of refrigeration which mostly comprised of refrigeration cabinets. Conservatively, picking the difference was hard. Arneg, Epta and Carrier had the biggest presence and biggest crowds. One of our favourites was the Hauser stand, apart from the company, the cabinets were “mint”. I was too scared to ask about pricing as the cases were obviously manufactured to a very expensive standard. A huge thank you to Brian Edkins from City, who took time out of his busy schedule to visit the De Rigo Refrigeration stand. We understand that this a very hectic time for the guys from City and every minute is precious. But Brian shared some of that great commodity to listen and show interest, this was certainly appreciated by the De Rigo/Coolphase team.

With thousands of cabinets to see, that are all energy efficient, that all work, that are all good looking, that all vary in price, how do you choose? What makes the De Rigo Refrigeration / Coolphase partnership stand apart? It’s simple, it’s our ability to serve our customers through being honest and responsive.

Know when to maintain em’…

“You’ve got to know when to hold ’em
Know when to fold ’em
Know when to walk away
And know when to run”
– Kenny Rogers, The Gambler

Not maintaining your refrigeration or air conditioning equipment can be a huge gamble. What’s the cost of being broken, rejected and unwashed? Most of us aren’t really sure and can’t put a number on it. So why, when it comes to some of the most expensive equipment we own, we are willing to take the risk on that investment failing.

“And the night got deathly quiet
And his face lost all expression
He said, If you’re gonna play the game, boy
You gotta learn to play it right

Play it right, be prepared. A clean here and a check there can leave you with a solid hand. Your chance of losing a bucket load of money on an expensive breakdown is awesomely reduced.

So many times we go out to a breakdown service and find the root cause to be a lack of care. An analogy frequently used in our industry is the one about the car. If you buy a car, whether it’s worth $13,000 or $300,000 you get it frequently serviced to maintain its integrity and reliability. But on the flip side, our commercial equipment, more often than not (worth more money) is neglected and left to burn…

Below is a photo of a small display fridge that’s been operating for 6 months. You can see the accumulation of dust has blocked about 30% of the condenser. If left, this will grow to 50, 60 or 70%, leaving the system exposed to failure, Failure of the compressor, condenser motor or pipe work.

All breakdowns can be costly. The cost of repairs, the cost of stock loss, the cost of human comfort.

So before summer hits “and the dealin’s done”, now’s the time to fold ‘em and get your equipment serviced, maintained or up-graded. Service rates are still low, and companies will be fighting for your business. You’ll also get the added bonus of being prepared for the next endless heat wave and even save some energy costs along the way!

We asked one of our service techs for a couple of ‘this could have been avoided’ pics. He did not disappoint. Thanks Chris!

  • Is there anything more we need to know?

Our first real Metcash Expo experience was full of excitement and surprises. We made friends, sampled great products and proved to ourselves that we belonged. So, the countless hours of planning and the meticulous budgeting has paid off.

And sure enough this next part may be a little cliché, but it needs to be said… “No one ever really knows what goes on behind the scenes. From the turmoil of making the initial financial commitment to the last crucial piece of artwork. It all takes dedication, inspiration and a will to be the best. We are fortunate at Coolphase to have that perfect team. The symmetric balance of conflict, creativity and expertise to get the job done right.

Amazing Partners

However, this all wouldn’t have been possible without the support of our fantastic partners, De Rigo RefrigerationBeijer Ref and Embraco

De Rigo Refrigeration our product partner has been instrumental in providing us with financial support. And most importantly cabinets that Australia can love and rely on. Andrea Lacedelli the De Rigo export manager has never waivered with his faith. He believes in our ability to represent the De Rigo Refrigeration brand. Andrea also spent every minute with us on the stand, which we truly appreciate, thanks Andrea.

The partnership with Beijer Ref and Embraco was born from our desire to display a full natural refrigerant solution.  Representing our continued commitment to our community and environment. An idea that we presented to Beijer Ref who embraced the concept with both hands and presented us with an introduction to our new friends at Embraco! A “Plug and Cool” unit was supplied for our Unicel cold room and bam, the final natural piece of the puzzle was in place!

To all of the people that worked tireless hours, to our friends that came to visit, to our partners that risked financial commitment, (to anyone that we have forgotten) and to Metcash for providing us with the opportunity, we thank you and look forward to being even bigger and better next year!

We usually make it pretty clear that we are proud of our people and the work that they do. This year to coincide with World Refrigeration Day, we are holding our first annual Coolphase Values Awards – “The W’s”. We’ll have a chilled celebration, throw in a few AWESOME miniaturised trophies and recognise the people that best represent who we are.

“The W’s, what the hell are W’s” you say… Yep, our crazy sense of humor is at it again… Being unique in all things that we do, our awards just couldn’t be boring. And this month the photo on the wall award goes to blah, blah, blah… ha-ha, no way! So, the W’s are Wadey, Woody and Warney, all three symbolise our core values of Up-Front, Humble and Craftsman.

The Wadey

The Marvel anti-hero Wade Wilson AKA Dead Pool, is an in your face guy that is brutally honest and extremely up-front. Although we don’t shoot things, we do love honesty and an up-front approach. So, our first W trophy (after countless ebay searches) is a bobble head Dead Pool figurine.

The Woody

After his early days as a jealous and arrogant “I’m Andy’s one and only” toy, Woody transformed into one of the most humble toys in the world. Woody always helps his friends and goes above and beyond to do what’s rightWe’ve had many occasions where our guys have gone out of their way to help people in need.

The Warney

It is without question that Shane Warne is the greatest leg spin bowler that the world has ever seen. His bowling was an art form, he was a true craftsman, far superior to other bowlers that were mere skilled technicians. Our best tradesman are proud to be called craftsmen, they always take pride in what you can’t see. Although the motive for this award is greatfinding a Warney doll was impossible, time to get creative! One of Warney’s greatest off-field achievements, without a doubt was Liz Hurleyand after a trip to Zing Pop Culture, we walked away with a Vanessa Kensington Pop vinyl figure.

As peer voting winds up this morning on “World Refrigeration Day”, we are proud to say that nearly all of our employees have received votes. It’s great that we all share and live our values and are proud of them!

What’s wrong with stripping down and being natural? We can get rid of synthetics, remove all fake blends and use what the earth provides, propane, Co2 and ammonia all the way!

I had a great time speaking at ATMOsphere Australia 2019. To be on the contractor’s panel where we could share our challenges and ideas was awesome. Although nervous and flapping around like a fish out of water, I was glad to be able to share our views on mindsets and training. Critical to our future, being prepared and accepting is essential, hopefully, our ideas and beliefs were well received.

Mindsets are so powerful they can be created or changed, developed or perfected. Our push to create a natural world will face many challenges, we will have nonbelievers, nonspenders and miserable realists. Our ability to inspire what is “just and right” will be significant in cementing change.

We have so many things in our favour when we try to instil a positive natural mindsetFor us and our people it’s exciting, new and old technologies combine to keep our minds fresh. Our customers can be shown the benefits of a reduced carbon footprint and the future proofing from increased and accelerated synthetic refrigerant costs. Clients can also be shown (in most cases) lower energy costs

“The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step” – Lao Tzu

Training us and our people is a great extension of mindset change. Once we have an open mind and our thoughts in a row, we can perfect and challenge. We can come up with new ideas, new technologiesand new best practice

All training starts with the teacher, in this case that’s us. teacher should be the greatest learner, you can’t teach what you don’t know. In a changing world we need to constantly learn so our lessons are up to date and informativeInformation on natural refrigerants and technology is everywhere, one of the best available resources is the Danfoss eLearning platform. Everyone at Coolphase, from apprentice to engineer is encouraged to log on and learn.

Attending ATMOsphere Australia 2019 was especially awesome, learning and hearing the experiences of  so many educated and knowledgeable people. I truly appreciate the opportunity to present and share our own views. The ‘Natural Refrigerant World’ is an exciting place, one we should all take pride in being a part of.

Every strategic discussion in our office more often than not, includes a reference to the use of natural refrigerants. We all know that we have an obligation to guide and direct our customers towards what is right. And ensure we can direct them on right thing by our planet and the sustainable future of resources. We are aware that we can’t let our “ego” or the “fear” of something new affect our judgement. Transcritical is not a dirty word.

The Process

To look at embracing natural, we first understood that we needed to change mindsets before we could change behaviors. And now in the midst of that process we have turned our focus to coaching and training.

The Challenge

We definitely see that some of the biggest “natural” challenges in our industry are a lack of training and the willingness of some people to accept something different. At Coolphase, it is our continued focus to train and to prepare our people for what’s to comeOur sector of the industry “Supermarket Refrigeration” has seen a decline in the employment of apprentices; so, the next generation of support will not there when the current ageing collective of fridgies retires. Not an ideal situation when we are about to enter our biggest period of change since the phase out of CFC’s.

And wow, when it comes to difference, there is a huge level of inherent misery and negativity in the Australian refrigeration industry, and the miserable hate change! We need to change minds and perceptions, then we can change behaviors and acceptance, we then need to coach.

The Future

As a contractor completing work for major retailers in Queensland we have been limited by the lack of “transcritical” and “full natural system” acceptance. However, with updates to technology and the continued promotion of all things non-synthetic, that should (hopefully) change soon.

If you’re interested in the changing future of natural refrigerants, join us for ATMOsphere Australia in May. For more information visit their event page.

I apologise in advance if my healthy quotes are incorrect and statements not quite right, as my notes are a little scratchy and only half complete.

DAY ONE

An intro, a light dinner, some networking. And WOW…, I was able to meet my Organisational Health mentor, Mr Pat Lencioni. Unsurprisingly Pat was a little overwhelmed by the tremendous support and attention that The Table Group’s little “Unconference” was attracting. But true to text Pat was as humble as all his writings would suggest.

Healthy Organisation
Our Healthy Logo

DAY TWO

Yep, and sorry we began with principles, blah, blah, blah, not really, the refresher was great. In fact I’m sure there were more than a few people in the room who loved everything and every model that was presented. The reinforcement of trust and accountability, the stories and humour. What organisation wouldn’t want to be this healthy?

Alan Mullaly

After the ‘four disciplines’ our first awesome guest joined Pat on stage; Alan Mulally, CEO extraordinaire, a huge grin on his face. Pat, you got it wrong, leadership is a privilege, it’s not hard, it’s not a sacrifice, we are here to serve!

“What motivates you as a leader, Alan”?

“Profitable growth for all, our people our stakeholders and our customers (in no particular order). Have a plan and execute, lead with joyful accountability. Wow, but trust, love and serve”.

As I listened to Alan and Pat and their healthy conflicting argument about leadership, my own thoughts were racing. It’s you and only you; the leader needs to be at the crest of the wave, the entrusted, the moral compass, the champion of clarity. It is an honour to serve our people and to take responsibility for providing a stable enjoyable environment and profitable future that they can all enjoy!

Chick-fil-A

Next up were Tim Tassopoulos and Andrew Cathy from Chick-fil-A, the chicken chain that employs over 120,000 people (and they all love their jobs). During the discussion, purpose and values were mentioned continuously and as it seemed, interviews as normal, the Sunday questions reared their head! “Family, faith and people; oh yeah – we don’t work on Sundays, on Monday our chicken tastes best”.

The Chick-Fil-A, Corporate Purpose: “To glorify God by being a faithful steward of all that is entrusted to us and to have a positive influence on all who come into contact with Chick-fil-A.”

Staying true to your values is not a compromise it’s “on Mondays it tastes best”! Too often we let our consumers and competitors dictate our better self, but; god bless, “on Mondays our chicken tastes best”! Thank goodness we left the Dallas airport on Saturday and we could cash in our free sandwich voucher… and yes, the Chick-fil-A experience was all that had been expressed. The staff were happy and polite, the service impeccable and the food something else (as the cows would say, “eat mor chikin”)!

I look through my scribbled notes from day 2, statements like “healthy = smarter over time”, “remind don’t instruct”, “over communicate” and “to serve” fill every page. The importance of leadership on all levels is essential for organisational health.

DAY THREE

Full of LUV – Southwest Airlines

LUV is Southwest Airline’s symbol on the New York Stock exchange. “We first started flying out of Love Field in Dallas, and our first advertising slogan in 1971 was “Southwest Airlines, the Someone Else Up There Who LUVs You.” Lead with LUV: A Different Way to Create Real Success.

The Southwest culture and LUV, the success and growth of an awesome company. These guys really do care about their people, and they have done from day one. How humbling to see LUV done so well!

This page in my note book remained relatively empty until Elizabeth Bryant the Southwest Chief Training Officer joined the stage; now it’s the page that’s the fullest! My biggest takeaway (there was lots to choose from), the Southwest Airlines University, “training, the Southwest way”. Not just training pilots and flight crew, but training (what I referred to as) Southwest 101, the teaching of values, purpose and culture.

Reinforce Clarity – ✔️

On day 3 Pat also allowed us all to have a copy of the first 1/3 of his new, not yet published book “The Motive”. Amy and the “Naked” team from Lighthouse Management Consulting are mentioned on page 2, awesome, Getting Naked is one of my favourites! Pat’s motive is clear from the intro: “I hope this book helps you adopt the right motive for leadership so that you can embrace the tasks required to make you organisation healthier and more effective. You, your employees, and your customers deserve that kind of leadership”. I can’t wait to read the whole thing.

Another great guest Silver Oak Winery CEO David Duncan produced some fantastic short quotes. “You can’t control what you can’t control, but you can control how you treat your people”. “Be humble, ask for help”. “Trust the process”.

Over all days there were “Ed Talks” and “Soap Box Sessions”, so many inspirational stories, so many inspiring friends.

“By choosing to believe in each other’s capacity we embody the connection we long for in so many of life’s other circumstances.” Justin Self

Organisation Health

Organisational health brings everyone in, it is the gel of human performance, it is the work smile and family bond that we all wished existed in our everyday lives.

Thank you, Pat and the Table Group, for putting down on paper and presenting what I have always instinctively felt or believed but didn’t know how to implement. I love being a leader, I love working on making our organisation healthy, I love the harmony, the cohesion, the adrenaline, and fulfillment of everyday. I am here to serve!

On with “the movement”, organisational health will evolve to be rule, not the exception…
